We all have days where we have little to no energy. We feel fatigued and bogged down as if our bodies are weighted down with chains meant to suppress our energy and keep us grounded. In the mornings when we need that extra perk to power through the day and possibly night, teas are a great source of energy for keeping one alert and energetic. A balanced breakfast can get your day off to a good start but incorporating some herbal variety into your morning routine can add that extra boost to your day without leaving you feeling jittery and anxious.

1. Matcha tea

A scoop of Matcha tea in the mornings can greatly increase your energy. Matcha is finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves, traditionally consumed in East Asia. Matcha has a high concentration of flavonoids which increases the brain frequency and produces an effect similar to serotonin. The tea also has properties that helps with stress and anxiety both of which can deplete your energy, leaving you feeling drained. 2. Peppermint tea

Research has shown that the natural compounds in peppermint have beneficial effects and can increase alertness and focus.

3. Green tea

Green tea is a type of tea that is made from Camellia sinensis leaves and buds that have not undergone the same withering and oxidation process which is used to make oolong teas and black teas. Green tea originated in China but its popularity has surged throughout the years due to its extensive beneficial properties. First and foremost green tea contains caffeine which helps with one’s energy levels throughout the day. Green tea has one of the highest concentrations of caffeine which makes it he number one herbal choice for non-coffee drinkers. I especially drink green tea right throughout the day and the benefits to my health, skin, and energy are amazing. Studies have shown that people are more productive and have stable energy when they consume green tea as opposed to coffee. Green tea also contains amino acids which work with caffeine to improve brain function. There are also added metabolic properties to green tea that make it a top pick for energy.

4. Yerba mate

Yerba mate is an herbal tea traditionally found in drinks in Latin and South America. It's made by steeping dried leaves from the yerba mate plant in hot water. Yerba mate tea contains caffeine, a serving of Yerba mate contains around 30-100 mg of caffeine. The average cup when brewed has about 70mg of caffeine compared to the 120mg that is found in a cup of coffee. This high concentration of caffeine is linked to increased alertness, improved concentration, and enhanced physical performance. Additionally, this herbal tea reduces fatigue and can help with depression which can zap a person's mental and physical energy. 5. Black tea

Black tea is made from the leaves of a bush called Camellia sinensis. Black tea is more oxidized than oolong, yellow, white, and green teas and is generally stronger in flavour than other teas. Black tea contains caffeine which helps to stimulate the brain increasing alertness and focus. While the tea does contain caffeine it’s about half that of coffee but is enough to reduce fatigue and keep you energetic throughout the day. The tea also contains antioxidants and its properties are known to improve metabolism.

Most people are addicted to coffee because it helps to keep them alert and functioning during the day. However, coffee with the many additives (milk, sugar, syrup, etc) has been shown to increase health problems such as heart disease, hypertension, and weight gain. Additionally, going herbal is always the better and healthier choice so why not replace that cup of coffee with one of the above? Not only do you benefit from increased energy but the many other benefits that come with these herbal teas.
